Happy Labor Day

I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day.  No new post today.  Instead, I would suggest you read or re-read the New York Times article about LEED and energy performance.

The article is one of my most important to come out on green building in awhile.  As I said on Friday, the most interesting part is the USGBC's suggestion that re-certification will be required in the future.

What do you think?

How long is it until we see a significant number of suits brought by tenants against a slew of defendants (architects, developers, USGBC?) for misreps regarding advantages of going green?

I enjoy your blog, keep it coming.

Interesting question. While purposeful misrepresentations are, hopefully, few and far between, some of the claims need tempering, if for no other reason than technology and aspirations have not coincided completely. The "green" label flies around way to easily and is often impliedly linked to LEED. LEED is one way to go and USGBC has been working on making sustainability and energy performance even more of a part of the system.

@Vivek Jayaram - The scenario you describe is the one that pops up in my head every time I read about an underperforming building.

@Christopher G. Hill - Great points. I keep thinking of the scenario where tenants are promised and get a LEED certified building, but then do not get energy savings.
